The Indonesian Education Institute (IPI) Garut, formerly known as Graduate School of Teacher Education and Educational Sciences (STKIP) Garut, established in 1983 under management Timbanganten Foundation of Garut. In 1985, this foundation joined other foundations to form Garut University Foundation, However, later on each college was again managed by its original foundation. To improve the quality of educational administration, on April 11, 1990, Timbanganten Foundation of Garut turned into Garut Education Foundation (YPG). Subsequently, on March 31, 2017, the YPG changed its name to Griya Winaya Foundation Garut.

In 2017, STKIP Garut officially changed its form to Indonesian Institute of Education (IPI) after receiving Letter of Decision of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 653/KPT/I/2017. This change is the result of dedication Prof. Dr. H. Nizar Alam Hamdani, M.M., M.T., M.Si., M.Kom, He was then the Chairman of STKIP Garut and is now the Rector of IPI.

Currently, IPI Garut has 14 study programs, consisting of 10 undergraduate programs, 3 master's programs, and 1 professional program. The Indonesian Institute of Education (IPI) Garut has two faculties:, Graduate School and Teacher Professional Education Program.
